The Heads of State keep it simple.

Jason Kernevich and Dustin Summers left Tyler School of Art in 2002 and soon found themselves designing for the Dillinger Escape Plan. Not getaway routes, but band branding: posters, shirts, hoodies.

One thing led to another, and soon they were leading the charge with the poster revival that's sweeping the land. Wilco. REM. A bevy of indies. And in their spare time, quick-turnaround work for a small daily called The New York Times.

Through it all, they've preserved their garage-band, startup approach. Noted for their graphic and conceptual elegance, they believe that "images should be simple, memorable and must possess a quality of familiarity."

Aside from posters and illustrations, they've tackled campaigns, book covers for Penguin Classics, and occasional logos?including identity design for The School of Visual Arts Masters in Interaction Design program. Recent projects include illustrations for The Atlantic... and branding a local barbershop.

They must be doing something right. In their studio, a shelf brims with bronze busts, globes, and nesting dolls. Hidden away are the awards from Communication Arts, American Illustration, Print Magazine, Graphis, and the Society of Illustrators.

Join CSCA on Thursday, May 19, when The Heads of State stop in from the hometown of Rocky Balboa. They'll make us do something harder than running up and down steps. They'll train us on how to keep it simple and memorable.
