"So I found myself picking out machine guns..."
Brian Mah Recap
January 19, 2012
Just another day at the office for Imaginary Forces director Brian Mah.
Here are a few things we love about Brian. He's a modest guy who doesn't seem at all like a famous LA director. He jokes about his mistakes, and is always experimenting. And despite the amazing motion portfolio he shared with us, he credits his success to the attention to detail he learned as a print designer. Not only has he not forgotten his roots, he embraces them every day. He calls it "cross pollination." We call it amazing.
Brian, like more than 200 others, braved the Columbus cold for a fantastic first CSCA meeting of 2012. Brian spent most of his talk deconstructing his best recent work, revealing the tricks, techniques and sometimes impossible timelines he and his team handle every day. From choosing prop maching guns and casting Ultimate Fighters to inventing a new way to blur the speed of NBA star Chris Paul, Brian showed us the behind-the-scenes inventiveness that sets IF work apart. "It's never easy," Brian noted. "We're always learning."
We learned a lot, too.
A few notes from the meeting:
• Be sure to mark your calendar for our next big event, Feb 16: a special screening of Eames: The Architect and The Painter, presented by the film's producer, Bill Jersey. This is one you can't miss! Hang around after the film and chat with this well-known documentary filmmaker.
• In the garage behind the Gateway Film Center, parking costs just $1 for three hours -- if you get your parking card validated. Be sure to ask a bartender about it.
• Speaking of bartenders, CSCA events are now held on the top balcony level at the Gateway. If you want a drink before the show, be sure to get it at the bar upstairs -- sales there help offset our event rental costs.
